Petition for Marriage and Divorce Documents in New York City
What is an Apostille?
An Apostille is a certification that verifies the authenticity of a document. The signature and the capacity of the official who executed the document is authenticated through an Apostille.
The Hague Convention of October 5, 1961, eliminated the requirement of legalization for foreign public documents. Therefore, any country that is part of the Hague Convention accepts the Apostille and no further legalization of the document is needed for international use. For documents that are going to be used in a country that is not part of the Hague Convention, a Certificate of Authentication is issued.
