  • The Tennessee Secretary of State located in Nashville apostilles public and private documents if the following applies:
  • Tennessee documents were issued by one of the following:
  • County Clerk.
  • State Registrar.
  • Secretary of State.
  • The Tennessee Department of State, Business Services Division, issues an Apostille or an Authentication under the authority of the Tennessee Secretary of State with respect to documents executed, issued or certified by Tennessee County Clerks, the Tennessee State Registrar, and the Tennessee Secretary of State.
    • Reminders
    • If a document needs an Authentication, the United States Department of State must also certify the Tennessee Secretary of State’s signature on the Authentication. This step is not necessary for an Apostille.

    Scanned Photocopy of Original Document

      You will need to make sure of the following:

    • Appropriate signature is NOT provided.
    • Original document is damaged.
    • Original document was issued over 10 years ago.
    • Destination country ACCEPTS apostilles of the scanned photocopy of the original document; most countries do accept an apostille of the scanned photocopy.
    • You need the apostille within 24 hours.

    • Reminders:

    • Because the notary and the apostille are required to be issued from the same state, the scanned photocopy of the original document that you provide will be notarized and apostilled in New York.
